Annotations of an ARM are often displayed as 1/1, 3/1, 5/1, 7/1, or 10/1. The first number, known as the initial period, indicates the number of years the interest rate remains fixed. The second number indicates succeeding years, known as the adjustment period, where the interest rate becomes variable and is adjusted annually.
